Women and Redemption in Wagner:the case of Senta

Michael Fuller studied Chemistry and Theology at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge before being ordained in the Church of England. He is currently a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, where he lectures on the relationships between science and religion, and an Honorary Canon of Edinburgh Cathedral. He has been attending Wagner performances for the last 36 years, and is a regular reviewer for The Wagner Journal. He has also published papers on operas by Hindemith, Britten and James MacMillan. His talk will explore the themes of salvation and redemption in Wagner, with a focus on the character of Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer and her presentation in some recent stage productions of this work.
