Robert Hayward in conversation with John Payne

Monday 13 January 2025 19:00 via Zoom

The UK-born bass-baritone Robert Hayward will be in conversation with John Payne for our January meeting.
After studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Robert Hayward joined Glyndebourne Touring Opera and made his professional opera debut singing the title role of Don Giovanni in 1986. He has sung since then at all the major UK opera houses, and overseas in Europe, the USA, Australia, and Canada.  In terms of Wagner roles, he has sung The Dutchman, Amfortas, Telramund, Kurwenal, Wotan and Alberich. His portrayal of Wotan/Wanderer in ENO’s Ring production was described by the Guardian as “overwhelming in his lyricism in Febriuary.” David Nice of the Arts Desk website said of his Opera North Wotan in 2016 that “He is now one of the greats……. magnificent and moving.” He has also sung Wotan at Glastonbury (!) and appeared with many of the UK’s and European leading orchestras in concert engagements. Robert Hayward will be singing the Dutchman for Opera North in February and March.

As usual, members of the Society will be sent the zoom link nearer the time. Non-members wishing to attend should contact susi.manchesterwagnersociety@gmail.com for details of how to attend the meeting

All are warmly invited to come along to what should be a lively talk
