Reginald Goodall – his Life and Achievements

On Monday February 10th at 7pm John Payne will be giving a talk on the life and achievements of the conductor Reginald Goodall, via Zoom.

Reginald Goodall (1901 – 1990) was a British conductor who, after a moment in the limelight in his early 40’s conducting the premiere of Britten’s ‘Peter Grimes’ in 1945, faded into obscurity as a member of the music staff at Covent Garden for over 20 years.  He had always been recognised as having a deep insight into Wagner’s music, and in 1968 what later became the English National Opera (ENO) took a gamble in inviting him to conduct their new production of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Goodall’s conducting of The Mastersingers was a sensation, and led him to be invited to conduct performances of The Ring, Tristan and Isolde and Parsifal over the following 20 years by ENO and Welsh National Opera, all acclaimed and all recorded. By the early 1980’s, Goodall’s was viewed by many as one of the greatest living interpreters of Wagner

As usual, members of the Society will be sent the zoom link nearer the time. Non-members wishing to attend should contact susi.manchesterwagnersociety@gmail.com for details of how to attend the meeting

All are warmly invited to come along to what should be a fascinating talk
