Derek Welton in conversation with John Payne – Monday 9 December 2024
The Australian-born bass-baritone Derek Welton will be in conversation with John Payne for our December Manchester Wagner Society talk via Zoom at 7pm on Monday 9th December.
Derek Welton is recognised as one of the leading voices of his generation, with a repertoire ranging from Bach and Handel to the present day. He is a regular guest at companies such as the Bayreuth Festival, the Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburg State Opera, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Dutch National Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago, in roles such as Wotan/Wanderer (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Amfortas and Klingsor (Parsifal), and König Marke (Tristan und Isolde).
Derek Welton’s discography includes performances as Wotan in Das Rheingold (Naxos), and Amfortas in Parsifal (Deutsche Grammophon). He has been singing Wotan in the current project to present “historically-informed performances of The Ring, in which musicians (instrumentalists, singers, conductor) work with musicologists in their attempt at creating an auditory experience of what Wagner’s operas would have sounded like when they were first performed” (Seen and Heard International)
As usual, members of the Society will be sent the zoom link nearer the time. Non-members wishing to attend should contact susi.manchesterwagnersociety@gmail.com for details of how to attend the meeting
All are warmly invited to come along to what should be a fascinating talk
