Parsifal – a Talk by Doctor Eric Doughney

Please come along to the next Wagner Society Manchester talk at 7pm on Monday April 14 via Zoom

We will have a talk by Dr Eric Doughney of Newcastle University on Parsifal.  Richard Wagner first read Wolfram von Eschenbach’s thirteenth-century romance, Parzival, in 1845. In 1857, he decided its suitability for a music-drama. The work was completed in 1882. Considering Parsifal’s thematic ancestry, protracted gestation and position within the Wagnerian canon, and building upon Bryan Magee’s thoughts on the composition of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Dr Doughney will be suggesting that Wagner’s final music drama, rather than simply an adaptation of Eschenbach’s tale and the culmination of the Gesamtkunstwerk, is both expression and product of age-related psychological phenomena occurring naturally within the human lifecycle.
As usual, members of the Society will be sent the zoom link nearer the time. Non-members wishing to attend should contactsusi.manchesterwagnersociety@gmail.com for details of how to attend the meeting.

All are warmly invited to come along to what should be a fascinating talk.
