Mark Berry talks about the Castorf Ring 23rd May

Mark Berry will talk to us about the Castorf Ring over Zoom on the 23rd of May at 7pm.

When Frank Castorf’s Ring opened in 2013, it proved highly controversial, at least as much as Patrice Chereau’s now much-loved ‘Centenery Ring’ of 1976. Over it’s five year run, many audience members came to find it more involving, as ‘postdramatic’ theatre and as treatment of history, revolution, and the latter’s failure (with striking similarities to  Wagner’s own path). Mark Berry explores some key ideas in this confrontation between two theatrical revolutionaries.

For those of you who have not been lucky enough to see the above production at Bayreuth a video recording of the full Ring is available on youtube.

This meeting will be the last one for this season, and we will be recommencing in  September.

As usual members will automatically receive the Zoom link nearer the time, and non-members wishing to attend should contact us at susi.wagnersocietymanchester@gmail.com
