Roger Allen will discuss the controversial life and career of Wilhelm Furtwängler as conductor of Wagner’s operas during the years of the Third Reich and in post war Europe. The lecture will include appraisal of historic recordings from the 1936 Bayreuth Festival and the 1937 Ring cycles at Covent Garden together with critical responses to Roger’s recently published book Wilhelm Furtwängler: Art, Politics and the Unpolitical (2018).
