A Conversation with Paul Carey Jones, bass baritone and Wagner singer. 19:00 via Zoom,
Wednesday 8th October 2025
Paul Carey Jones will be in conversation with our Chair, John Payne, for our second Zoom meeting in the 2025-26 season. Please note the unusual day for the talk. Welsh-Irish bass-baritone Paul Carey Jones has appeared as a principal guest artist for opera companies across the UK and Europe. He was recently elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his contribution to the classical music industry. The September 2025 issue of Opera magazine describes him as “The UK’s most convincing heldenbariton right now”.
His operatic work includes appearances for the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, Teatro Comunale Bolzano, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Gothenburg Opera, Opera Holland Park, Estonian National Opera, and the Icelandic Opera.
He has appeared extensively as Wotan in Wagner’s Ring cycle, most notably for Longborough Festival Opera, where Gramophone magazine recently described him as being “well along the path to being one of the towering Wotans of our time”. Other Wagnerian roles include the Dutchman in Der Fliegende Holländer, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde, Amfortas in Parsifal, Donner in Das Rheingold and Gunther in Götterdämmerung.
His critically acclaimed first book Giving It Away – Classical Music in Lockdown and other fairytales was published in October 2020 and is on sale from online booksellers worldwide. His other interests include campaigning on the issues facing performing arts freelancers in the UK as a core member of Freelancers Make Theatre Work, and conducting research into the use of Artificial Intelligence in vocal healthcare for singers, most recently being lead author on the published paper Machine Learning for Monitoring Vocal Health and Performance of Professional Singers presented at the 2024 ISCAS Conference in Singapor
As usual, members of the Society will be sent the zoom link nearer the time. Non-members wishing to attend should contact susi.manchesterwagnersociety@gmail.com for details of how to attend the meeting
All are warmly invited to come along to what should be a fascinating talk
