Alberich: Antagonist or Protagonist?

It is easy to see Alberich as the villain of the Ring. Wotan certainly sees him this way and so do many directors. He is often used as an example of Wagner’s anti-semitism and, while the great Brünnhildes, Wotans, Siegfrieds et al are endlessly poured over and celebrated, Alberich rarely gets a mention.
This evening, guided by our president, Derek Blyth, we will examine the drama from Alberich’s point of view, giving him the voice for a change and allowing him to stand up for himself. He’s probably never going to be the hero of the drama but he may be less of a villain than is usually supposed.
